A Regenerative Approach to Eye Health
The surface of the eye plays an important role in comfort, vision, and protection. When this delicate tissue becomes severely dry, inflamed, or damaged, healing can become difficult.
A 2024 clinical study explored the use of platelet lysate eye drops made from human umbilical cord blood for people experiencing serious ocular surface problems related to graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). The patients included in the study had severe symptoms that had not responded well to previous treatments.
Platelet lysate contains naturally occurring growth factors and other biological components that may help support tissue repair, making it an interesting area of regenerative medicine research.
Taking a Closer Look at the Study
The study included 22 adults between the ages of 25 and 46 with severe ocular surface disorders.
Participants were divided into three groups based on their condition:
- Severe dry eye disease and filamentary keratitis
- Significant inflammation and damage affecting the cornea and eyelids
- Corneal ulcers
The umbilical cord blood platelet lysate was prepared as eye drops, and participants used them throughout the study. Researchers measured changes in symptoms, pain, tear production, vision, inflammation, and corneal healing.
Encouraging Improvements
Researchers reported improvements across several areas of eye health. Among participants with severe dry eye disease, symptom scores improved by an average of 45% after 30 days. Tear production also increased by about 30%.
Pain showed especially encouraging changes:
- Pain decreased by about 60% after the first month
- By the end of the study, pain had decreased by about 90%
Researchers also observed improvements in tear-film stability, inflammation, and visual measurements.
Supporting Corneal Healing
Some of the most notable results involved participants with corneal ulcers.
After 90 days:
- Eight of nine patients experienced more than a 50% reduction in ulcer size
- Seven of the nine ulcers completely healed
- Pain and inflammation continued to decrease throughout treatment
No treatment-related local or systemic adverse events were reported during the study.
These findings suggest that umbilical cord blood platelet lysate may help create an environment that supports healing on the surface of the eye.
Why Platelet Lysate Is Interesting
Platelets are commonly associated with blood clotting, but they also contain growth factors and proteins involved in tissue repair.
By creating eye drops from umbilical cord blood platelet lysate, researchers were able to deliver these biological components directly to damaged areas of the ocular surface. This approach highlights another way regenerative medicine may use naturally occurring biological signals to support the body’s healing processes.
A Promising Area of Ocular Regeneration
The results of this clinical study were encouraging. Participants experienced improvements in dry-eye symptoms, tear production, pain, inflammation, vision, and corneal healing.
The healing observed in patients with corneal ulcers was particularly notable, with seven of nine ulcers completely healed by the end of the 90-day study. The absence of treatment-related adverse events also supported a favorable safety profile.
While additional research will be important, this study highlights the potential of umbilical cord blood platelet lysate as a regenerative approach for supporting damaged ocular tissues.
