What Causes Wrist and Hand Pain?

The wrist and hand contain joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and nerves that work together to support grip and precise movement. Pain can develop after injury, repetitive use, inflammation, arthritis, nerve compression, or surgery. The location, timing, symptoms, and effect on function help guide evaluation and treatment.

Common Causes

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendinitis or tenosynovitis
  • Osteoarthritis or other arthritis
  • Ligament or tendon injuries
  • Overuse or repetitive-stress injuries
  • Post-traumatic pain or stiffness

Symptoms can include pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling, swelling, weak grip, reduced motion, clicking, or discomfort with typing, lifting, or grasping.

Current Medical Treatments

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity demands, and medical history. Initial care often aims to reduce symptoms, restore motion and strength, and protect function.

Standard Treatment Categories

  • Rest, splinting, activity modification, and ergonomic adjustments
  • Ice and anti-inflammatory medicines when appropriate
  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • Corticosteroid injections for selected conditions and short-term symptom relief
  • Surgery for severe carpal tunnel syndrome, significant ligament or tendon injury, advanced arthritis, or symptoms that do not respond to appropriate nonsurgical care

Regenerative Medicine Research for Wrist and Hand Pain

PRP therapy and cell-based products are being studied as biologic approaches for selected wrist and hand conditions. Researchers are evaluating different products, preparation methods, injection techniques, and patient groups.

What Researchers Are Studying

  • Influence inflammation and cellular signaling in injured or painful tissue
  • Be delivered safely and feasibly for selected conditions
  • Improve pain, grip strength, mobility, function, or other patient-reported outcomes
  • Be further evaluated alongside therapy, corticosteroid injection, or other established treatments

PRP, cell-based products, and exosome products are distinct approaches. Research results can vary by diagnosis, product, treatment protocol, injection technique, rehabilitation plan, and outcome measures.

Note: PRP, stem cell, and exosome therapies for wrist and hand conditions are investigational and are not FDA-approved for these uses. Research findings do not guarantee individual results.

How Regenerative Medicine for Wrist and Hand Conditions Is Being Studied

Researchers are studying biologic approaches for hand osteoarthritis, wrist tendinopathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, thumb-base osteoarthritis, and wrist ligament injury. Studies assess pain, function, grip strength, imaging findings, nerve measures, and safety. This work is helping identify the products, delivery methods, and patient groups that warrant continued clinical study. Regenerative treatment for wrist and hand pain remains investigational.

Recent Clinical Studies on Regenerative Treatments for Wrist and Hand Conditions

2025: PRP Meta-Analysis Reported Improved Symptoms and Function in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Efficacy and Safety of Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis — Read Study

This meta-analysis evaluated seven studies involving 365 people with carpal tunnel syndrome who received PRP or conventional treatment. Compared with conventional treatment, PRP was associated with greater improvements in symptom severity at one, three, and six months and better function at three and six months. Pain also improved at three months, and no serious adverse reactions were reported in the studies that tracked them.

2024: PRP Review Reported Reduced Pain and Improved Wrist Function in De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Platelet-Rich Plasma for De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis — Read Study

This systematic review evaluated 12 studies of PRP for de Quervain’s tenosynovitis, a painful condition affecting tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. The pooled analysis included two studies involving 194 participants. PRP was associated with greater reductions in pain and better wrist-function scores than conservative treatment at one and six months, though larger controlled studies are still needed to confirm the results.

2024: Injection-Therapy Analysis Reported PRP Improvements in Carpal Tunnel Symptoms, Pain, and Function

Injection Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials — Read Study

This systematic review and network meta-analysis evaluated 18 randomized studies comparing different injection treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome. PRP was associated with improvements in symptoms, pain, and function over both shorter and longer follow-up periods, while corticosteroid injections showed benefits primarily in the short term.

Could Regenerative Medicine Be Right for You?

For people with persistent wrist or hand pain, PRP therapy and other regenerative medicine approaches may be topics to discuss with a healthcare provider. A consultation can help review your diagnosis, imaging, symptoms, prior treatment, activity goals, and rehabilitation plan. You may also wish to learn more about stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis and regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal injuries, since evidence for a particular approach may differ by diagnosis, injury, and joint.

At Stemedix, we take a patient-centered approach to regenerative medicine, informed by emerging clinical research. Our team reviews your medical history, current treatment plan, and goals to help determine whether an investigational regenerative approach may be appropriate to explore.

Umbilical Cord MSC Exosomes and Disc Health: A New Look at Back Pain Research

Why Disc Degeneration Matters Back pain and neck pain are extremely common, and one major contributor is intervertebral disc degeneration. The intervertebral discs sit between the bones of the spine and help absorb shock, support movement, and keep the spine flexible. Over time, these discs can lose structure, hydration, and strength. When this happens, it…

Understanding Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Intervertebral disc degeneration, often called IVDD, occurs when the discs between the bones of the spine begin to lose structure, hydration, and function. These discs act as cushions that help absorb shock, support movement, and maintain flexibility in the spine. As degeneration progresses, the inner portion of the disc, known as…
